Son La has prospered on the back of its location as a natural transit point between Hanoi and Dien Bien Phu. It may not be one of Vietnam’s must – see destinations, but the surrounding scenery is impressive and there are enough diversions to occupy half a day.

The surrounding region is one of Vietnam’ most ethnically diverse and home to more than 30 different minorities including Black Thai, Meo, Muong and White Thai. Vietnamese influence in the area was minimal until the 20^th century; from 1959 to 1980 the region was part of the Tay Bac Autonomous Region

What to Do ?

There is not much to see in the town except the Old French Prison and Museum. In prision, there is a peach tree that was planted by To Hieu, a communist fighter who beheaded in the 1940's.

When to go?

Sonla has a temperate climate throughout the year with the annual average temperature of about 21ºC. It is possible to do trips to Son La all year round but the best time is from September to April.

Most of hotels in the town are basic.There are daily flights from Hanoi to Sonla but the schedule is highly changeable and delayed.
